SHOW
BUSINESS
When VMAC revs the 6.4L
Powerstroke, passerbies at the industry's biggest
tradeshows flock to the hood. Spectators watch as
VMAC technicians fire up the toaster-sized,
custom- engineered rotary-screw air compressor
tucked beside the alternator. No one believes that
the pint- sized compressor is capable of powering
the twin 90LB jackhammers at the side of the
truck. That is until two spectators finger the
triggers and send 36ft² of concrete flying.
That's a VMAC
tradeshow.
But wowing crowds and
destroying concrete is only half the fun. Making
believers out of hundreds of contractors, mobile
mechanics, and equipment managers is what hails a
show a success.
Rock the industry and break
some concrete with VMAC in 2009! And be sure to
visit us at these up-and- coming
tradeshows:

NEW TOOLS |

LEAN, MEAN, DOOSAN
MACHINE
Fast tool-setting, a flexible
skill set, and a rapid traverse of 1,889 inches
per minute, the new Diamond Series 5100 Horizontal
Machining Center by Doosan is quickly earning its
stripes on the VMAC production floor.
Once programmed, the Doosan is
capable of machining dozens of components
simultaneously thanks to a 60-tool, laser-guided
setup. This flexibility not only allows the
turnaround of a multitude of parts, it eliminates
manual tool-change, cutting down on human
oversight.
A touch probe senses loaded
fixtures holding raw materials, while a
laser-guided arm measures tool lengths and
isolates the right tool for the job. Naming the
tool takes longer than the machine takes to load
it, with a 1.5 second rapid tool- change rate.
"There's no setup required for
VMAC core components, so it's product on demand."
Chris McDonald, VMAC machining supervisor.
Think all this speed cuts down
on precision? Think again. The Doosan's
repeatability falls within ±0.00008 of an inch.
And if the machining center's
null setup-time and unprecedented precision wasn't
enough to make lean manufacturers smile, it
features improved tool cooling from a max of 250
PSI to 1000 PSI. This is not only extending the
life of VMAC's tools, it pushes the machine to
operate at higher speeds.
At maximum capacity, the Doosan
machines dozens of unique parts per day, upwards
of 500 per month, from integral bread-and-butter
components like aluminum air-ends to made-to-order
custom brackets.

INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT

VMAC WORKS FOR THE TIRE
INDUSTRY
It's a trucker's worst
nightmare. A steer-tire blowout at 60 miles an
hour forces his 40 ton rig to the shoulder of one
of the most treacherous highways on Vancouver
Island. Not enough to make his Monday? What if the
container's holding 990 cubic feet of frozen surf
and turf bound for the West Coast resort
community...
Fortunately, big help was on
the horizon.
Highway Tire is one of the few
companies that consider the 100 mile-long mountain
pass a "jobsite". Servicing commercial fleets for
over twenty years, they know that their equipment
makes the difference between a two hour job and a
half-hour one, getting their customers back in
commission faster and at a lower cost. That's why
Kade Van Shaik, mobile tire technician at Highway
Tire, retired his reciprocating air compressor in
favor of an air compressor that would optimize his
tools and maximize his time. For that, Kade
enlisted a VMAC UNDERHOOD.
Designed with the mobile mechanic in
mind, the UNDERHOOD Rotary-Screw Air Compressor
System designed by VMAC is compact, lightweight,
and powerful. Mounting entirely under the hood and
passenger-side frame, the system delivers air
wherever and whenever Kade needs it - instantly,
continuously, and easily.
"My old reciprocating air
compressor system wouldn't crack the nuts free.
This is not an issue now."
As Kade pulls up to the
refrigerated rig, he puts his V10 Ford Gas
mechanic truck in neutral, and flips the air
switch inside the cab. By the time he's pulled
around back for an air line and a 1" impact gun,
he's got 70 CFM and 175 PSI of undadulterated air
power.
Tire installs are a lot quicker
because I don't have to wait for air. I used to
get one or two lug nuts off, then I would have to
wait a couple of minutes for the air compressor to
build air. Now I don't have to wait."
Tire buffer? Quick-air chuck?
Air gun? "My [UNDERHOOD] air compressor keeps up
with anything I'm doing, I can't outwork
it."
Within the hour, Highway Tire's
customer is on the road, Vancouver Island's
resorts supplied the evening's cuisine, and Kade's
back in the cab prepped for the next roadside
emergency. "[The VMAC UNDERHOOD] helps me get my
job done fast so I can quickly move on to my next
job, and get home before dark."
